Things to Look At - A Black Wall

Decorating is hard. I'm thinking about painting the wall black between our kitchen and living room. It all started with the idea of a chalkboard wall, but I've heard those start to look really shabby after a few months (any advice?), so I gravitated towards a plain black/dark grey wall, with magnetic primer. In the kitchen, I thought I'd use it showcase the kids' artwork. The kitchen receives A LOT of light, so I think the room could handle the dark color, but I'm scared a black wall could make the whole house depressing looking. What do you think?

  1. I painted our pantry wall and part of the kitchen wall with black magnetic chalkboard paint back in October. http://notsosahm.blogspot.com/2011/10/paint-it-black-magnetic-chalkboard.html

It definitely does not look black anymore, but I like that it looks weathered in and well used. I painted one coat less than recommended and saved the rest of the can thinking I'd do a quick topcoat to freshen it up in about 6 months. I love it -- the kids use it for drawing and playing with magnets and I use it for lists, dinner menus and art display. Do it - you can always paint over it!

  2. Just read your post on Honest to Nod and I am happy to find your blog! I'll add it to my Reader right away because it looks like it's right up my alley. My Baby Lulu (6 months) and I do a daily dance party in the kitchen (with her in the jumperoo). We've been rocking out to Aretha Franklin lately.
