Things to Make - Candied Orange Peels

untitled (9 of 28).jpg

Since we've visited quite a few colonial places this summer (Colonial Williamsburg, Frontier Culture Museum, and Claude Moore Colonial Farm), I thought we should try some sort of craft or cooking project based in the late 1700s. I purchased Colonial Kids: An Activity Guide to Life in the New World (A Kid's Guide series) for ideas (great book).

Candied orange peels appeared yummy and easy (we had all the ingredients on hand) and the kids seemed amazed that we actually made our own candy. Pretty cool.

INGREDIENTS:
3 oranges, water, 1 tablespoon salt, 2 cups sugar

1. Wash and peel the oranges.

2. Place the peels in a bowl filled with water. Add salt. Set a plate on top of the oranges in the bowl to make sure they stay submerged. Soak overnight.

3. Drain the water and rinse the peels. Scrape off the thick, white membrane with a spoon.

4. Place the peels in a pan and cover with water. Boil for 20 minutes. Drain. Then repeat this step.

5. Cut the peels into long thin strips and place in a saucepan. Add 3/4 cup water and 2 cups sugar (yes, this is A LOT of sugar). Stir and cook over low heat for about 30 minutes, until all the water is gone.

6. Cool on wax paper.

7. Eat.

  2. Bookmarking! Looks delicious. A chocolate store down the street does this, but they dip the candied orange peels in chocolate.
